One day when Maurice leaves to sell his music boxes, he suddenly finds himself in a mysterious castle at nightfall, where, after eating a good dinner, immediately leaves after he thinks he hears a teacup talk, but plucks a rose before leaving, drawing the attention of the Beast, who frightens Maurice from his horse, Philippe, and drags him away. The horse, Philippe, comes back to the village and Belle, sensing that something awful must have happened to Maurice, rides on the horse all the way to the castle. There, she sees Maurice locked up in a dungeon and she pleads with the Beast to free him and even let her swap places with him, Maurice objects but is ignored.
Despite being locked up in the dungeon, a sorrowful Belle is surprised that she is suddenly released by the castle's bouteiller, Lumiere, who was enchanted into a candelabra as a result of the Enchantress's curse. She is given a better room, despite the objections of the castle's majordomo, Cogsworth, who was turned into a mantel clock. Belle gets friendly with the other castle members such as Mrs. Potts, who is the head of the castle's kitchen staff, and was turned into a teapot: her son Chip, into a teacup; Lumiere's girlfriend Plumette, into a feather duster. Maestro Cadenza's wife and opera singer, Madame de Garderobe, into a wardrobe; and the maid and court composer, Maestro Cadenza, into a harpsichord.
Belle wanders into the forbidden West Wing, after a meal from the staff , where she is frightened by the Beast causing her to race out into the forest, where Belle encounters a pack of wolves. The Beast rescues Belle but he is injured in the process. As she tends to him back at the castle, Mrs. Potts informs Belle that the Beast's fiery nature stems from the cruelty of his father after his kind mother died, causing Belle to sympathize with the Beast.
Meanwhile, Maurice returns to the village and despite his plea is unable to convince the others to rescue Belle. Gaston goes to meet him to gain his approval to marry Belle, but soon tires of Maurice's seemingly far-fetched tale and reveals his true colours to him, prompting Maurice to deny him of Belle. In revenge, Gaston chains Maurice to a tree. However, Maurice is rescued by a villager named Agathe and he returns to the village to persecute Gaston of leaving him to the wolves. Although some of the villagers defend Maurice, Gaston convinces the villagers to send Maurice to the town's insane asylum.
Back at the castle, the Beast after giving Belle access to a library, he also shows Belle another magical item left by the Enchantress, a book that allows anyone to go anywhere they desire. Belle uses it to send the two Paris where they enter a small house that Belle used to live in with her parents, but discovers that it's old and abandoned and soon learns from a doctrine mask that her mother died from the plague. Later upon sharing a romantic evening dance together in the castle's ballroom, the Beast senses Belle missing her father and lends her his magic mirror to see him, but she reacts in terror when she sees the villagers assault him. The Beast lets her go out to save him and he gives her the mirror to remember him by. Belle finds Maurice and brings him home. As Gaston is about to forcibly bring Maurice to the asylum, Belle proves Maurice's sanity by showing the Beast with the magic mirror. Realizing that Belle loves the Beast, Gaston convinces the villager that the Beast is a man-eating monster and leads them to the castle to kill him.
With Maurice's aid, Belle escapes from confinement and rides to save the Beast. Meanwhile, the servants repel the villagers as they arrive the castle as Lefou defects from Gaston and switches sides with the servants. Finding a heartbroken Beast, Gaston shoots him with his gun. When Belle arrives, Gaston gloats about his victory, but soon the Beasts gets up and subdues Gaston, but eventually spares his life and instead orders him to leave before reuniting with Belle. However, Gaston fatally shoots the Beast from a footbridge causing him to crumble and fall to his death.
The Beast soon dies in Belle's arms and the enchanted staff lose their anthropomorphic state. Agathe enters the Beast's room just as Belle confesses her love for the Beast, before revealing herself to be the Enchantress when she turns the petals into enchanted dust and sends them to the Beast, slowly turning him back into a human, resurrecting him, and reversing the curse as the castle is restored to its former glory. As the newly restored Prince and Belle kiss, the rest of the staff turns back from objects into humans and rejoin the world. Belle happily dances with the Prince in the ballroom as everyone watches in delight and as she is now living contently with her new family.
