BEHIND THE FICTION: SOFIA BOUTELLA

This week on Behind the Fiction, HybridMovies zero's in on Sofia Boutella, who plays the villain, Princess Ahmanet, in Universal Pictures monster-hit, The Mummy.

Sofia Boutella is an Algerian-French dancer, model, and actress who was born on the 3rd of April 1982. She's been into arts since she was a 5 year old when she started classical dance education. At age 10, she started rhythmic gymnastics and began representing the french national team at 18.
As a dancer, Sofia was part of a group called Vagabond Crew which won the battle of the year award, a street dancing competition, in 2006. She is a graduate of renown Berklee College of Music. She has danced in several films and television appearance, as well as commercials and concert tours. She has starred in famous music videos like Madonna's Sorry(2006), Chris brown's Wall to Wall(2007), Usher's Hey Daddy(2009), Ne-yo's Champagne Life, to mention just a few.

As an actress, Boutella has featured in movies such as Street Dance 2(2012), Kingsman: The Secret Service(2014), Star Trek Beyond (2016) and is due to feature in the upcoming movie Atomic Blonde(2017). In preparation for her role as Princess Ahmanet in The Mummy 2017, she confesses her love for the Original sequence of The Mummy fueled her desire to play the role especially when director Alex Kurtzmans revealed his intention to give homage to the original ones(Mummy Sequence) and still adapt it to modern times and technology. When probed about her thoughts on Ahmanet's character, she replies,"I'm not the kind of person to spell out interpretations for people and would rather audiences find their own meaning". She goes on to quip, " Once you've been heart-broken and hurt, in that matter, it's hard to come back. There's a monster that starts to come to life inside of you and you can decide to act on it or not".

Her preciseness in playing the role of any character on-set has made Sofia one of the fastest rising stars in action-cinema, propelling her to popularity after a show-stopping act in Kingsman: The Secret Service.
Despite the fame and acclaim from such starring roles, Sofia confesses,"I don't really want to be defined as an action star. I have been lucky so far because I've been reading materials that I love. That's why I did Star Trek and now The Mummy, but I don't go towards projects because they are action. I just fall in love with scripts. I want to fall in love with the story."
Clearly Sofia has risen from backing-dancer to action star and Hybridmovies thinks she's here on the big screen to stay.
