THE WEEKEND AT THE BOX OFFICE: JANUARY (12 - 14)

JUMANJI CONTINUES TO PREY AT No. 1 SPOT AS THE POST MAKES GIANT LEAP TO PERCH AT No. 2

Having coasted its way to the top of the Box-Office last week for the first time since its release over 25 days ago, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, continues its perch at the top with a weekend gross of $27 million from 3,849 theatres to place the Sony Studios jungle-hit with a total-gross of $283.1 million.
The surprise of the weekend is undoubtedly, The Post: A Stephen Spielberg political thriller film that stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks which catapulted its way 13 spots to second position (2) on the list. For a film with such A-list ensemble and one of the best directors of all time, its a bit disappointing it is only just setting off on the Box-Office list. A fourth weekend draw of $18.6 million to bring its total gross to just $23 million speaks volumes of its low rating. To put into better context it has a budget of $50 million which leaves it with a deficit of $27 million on its production cost.

The much anticipated Liam Neeson classic The Commuter, opened to a respectable $13.45 million in its opening weekend to perch at no.3 spot. The Lionsgate Studios action thriller opened to warm reception from critics despite its mixed to less impressive reviews.

Universal Studios Insidious: The Last Key dropped two steps below to 4th with a weekend gross of $12.1 million from 3,150 theatres to amass a total gross of $48.3 million in less than 14 days. The horror thrill still scares the shit out of viewers and for the records too, is presently 2018's highest grossing movie.

Pulling its weight at number (5) is The Greatest Showman, Fox Studios musical drama is still going strong with $11.8 million in the bank in only its fourth weekend. It has a Total-gross of  $94.5 million.

Running The Greatest Showman close in sixth(6) position is Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with $11.2 million from 3,090 theatres. This sees it slip from third to sixth this weekend. It however has a Total-gross of $591 million. Paddington 2 and Proud Mary launched at $10.6 million and $10 million to place 7th and 8th in the duos opening weekend.

Climbing down four steps to 9th is Universal Studios,  Pitch Perfect 3, with $5.6 million and its boosted to a Total-Gross of $94.6 million while rounding up the top 10 with $4.5 million from 1,693 theatres is Focus Studios Darkest Hour for a total gross of $35.7 million.

                                                                                                 See you next weekend.
