Black Panther steals the Box-Office Limelight


As expected, Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest humdinger, Black Panther, was the cynosure of almost all theatre fateful's eyes over its opening weekend and it didn't just leave up to expectations, it took down some records with it as it launched to a global gross of $389 million, topping the Box-Office in the process. Its $192 million North American gross makes it the fifth film with the largest debut gross of all time behind- Star Wars:The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The last Jedi, Jurassic World and The Avengers- and the highest debut gross ever for a February film, overtaking Deadpool (2016) which launched to $132 million. In achieving such figures ($192), Marvel's first film directed by a black man(Ryan Cougler) toppled the record($98M) for the biggest debut for a black director which was previously held by F.Gary Gray in his blockbuster flick The Fate of the Furious (2017), making it Marvel's 18th straight number one debutant. It has a budget of $200 million. You really should have a dose of it, so go grab your tickets if you are yet to.

Coming in second position this week is Peter Rabbit ,voiced by James Corden and sees Peter Rabbit's feud with Mr McGregor escalate to great heights as they rival for the affections of the pretty Bea,who lives next door, had a decent second weekend with $17.25 M from 3725 theatres to close the weekend with a cumulative gross of $48.22 million.

Universal Studios Fifty Shades Freed romped its way down from number 1 spot the previous weekend down to 3rd position after amassing $16.94 M from 3,768 locations to close with a total gross of $76.1 M. Still going strong.

In its 9th weekend since opening to modest figures, Jumanji , continues to roar loudly. The Sony Studios Jungle blockbuster consolidates at number four this week with $7.94 M from 3,768 locations. The Dwayne Johnson featured film that also stars Kevin Hart and Jack Black has a domestic total gross of $377.6 million.

Fortune favours the brave as a group of young Americans rise to save the day in Warner Bros' action flick, 15:17 to Paris which came up 5th with $7.9 million in its second weekend from 3,042 studios for a total gross of $25.432 million.

The Greatest Showman continues to enthral audience as it closed the weekend smiling to the bank with a princely $5.1 million. The Fox Studios presentation that stars Hugh Jackman and Zendaya amongst others is 62 days since its opening weekend yet goes strong with a total gross of $164.47 million.
Lionsgates debut weekend of Early Man, comes up 7th with £3.15 million from 2,494 locations at an average of $1,263 per theatre. Fox's Maze Runner: The Death Cure, drops down to 8th this weekend with $2.52 million from 1,892 locations while Winchester is boosted with a $2.23 million to a total gross of $21.86 million in its 3rd weekend and rounding up the Top-10 is Pure Flix's Samson which debuts to $1.97 million from 1,249 locations.
